The idea of unclogging your drain yourself seems obvious. You save money right? Maybe. Maybe not. Most people who make an attempt on their own go about it the wrong way. Let’s just say that if you are using a can or bottle of something you picked up from the shelf at the mart store, it’s really not the best plan. The harsh chemicals in these cleaners can really harm your pipes. Use these chemicals enough and you may even damage the pipes. Can you imagine having to replace all of those pipes? It’s possible that the drain cleaners might not even work on the type of clog that you are facing. Even if they do, the solution is usually temporary at best. The clog you so despise will return again.
So you bought the cleaners as a money saving idea but the cost of the damage to your pipes and the number of bottles that you have to buy really can add up. Why not consider a professional from the start?
Professional Drain Cleaning Offers
When you rely on the professionals at Ben Franklin Plumbing, a professional technician will visit your home providing quality service and clear benefits. The clog is going to be taken care of. Ben Franklin technicians can clean out all the gunk and muck that builds up in your drain lines. It probably doesn’t cost as much as you think.
When you are choosing a drain cleaning professional, be sure you chose the very best; Ben Franklin Plumbing in Columbus and Auburn. We are ready to serve you.
My! What a tall toilet you have! Ever wondered about that? Why are the toilets in commercial buildings taller than the toilet at your house? Maybe you want a taller toilet in your home. You can have one. The taller toilets are used in commercial buildings because the law requires them. Taller toilets can be very helpful for the elderly, people with hip or knee problems or those who frequently have leg pains. If you are considering one for your home and there will be children around, keep in mind that the extra height may be difficult for them to work with.
Did you even know that your house had a vent? Where is it and what does it do? Take a look at your roof. More than likely, the pipe you see coming up from the roof is a plumbing vent. Oh there may be more than one pipe meaning there is also a water heater or furnace but in most cases, it is a plumbing vent. To be up to code, legal and safe, every plumbing system has to be vented.
This venting system allows a balance in pressure so that the water in the P traps remains in place and doesn’t get sucked down the drain. This keeps the sewer gasses from venting back up into your house through your plumbing fixtures. The P trap is the U shaped pipe under your sinks and built into your toilet. This P trap stays full of water thereby trapping sewer gasses.

You may never even think about your water heater unless you hop in the shower one morning only to be greeted by a blast of cold water instead of the steamy, warm wake up you are used to. Whether you have recently had such a rude awakening or if you are simply considering a new hot water heater, you first need to decide between a traditional water heater and a tankless water heater. Maybe you haven’t even considered going tankless because you don’t know that much about them. Here are some things to consider:
Traditional Water Heaters
There are both gas and electric water heaters. They both do the same thing. A traditional gas or electric water heaters heat water in a tank. This means that you have a tank full of water being heated all the time just in case you need it. If you use a lot of hot water at one time, say when your family is getting ready to start the day, that tank fills back up with cold water and it may take a while to heat up.
Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless water heaters only heat water as you need it. Since the water is heated on-demand, there is no need for a tank of water that needs to be kept hot just in case you need it. Tankless water heaters are smaller and take up much less space than traditional water heaters. Again, no tank.
Which is better for you?
Tankless may be the way to go because:
- a tankless water heater only costs about half as much as traditional when it comes to energy costs.
- a tankless water heater will last about twice as long.
- since there is no tank of water to keep heating, a tankless water heater is great for reducing the monthly gas bill.
Have You Decided Yet?
The professionals at Ben Franklin Plumbing in Columbus and Auburn can help. Ben Franklin Plumbing technicians only install the latest technology in tankless and traditional water heaters. We can help you decide on the right water heater for your home. Call us in Columbus at 706.405.2311 or in Auburn at 334.246.4246 and we can get started today.
In some cases, your house may not offer you any other option. Once problems have presented themselves it may be the only option and it may be a do-it-now situation.
If you are living in an older home, you may consider the option to repipe the house if your existing pipe was not installed properly, if inferior materials were used in the original construction, there are leaks often, or maybe the water coming out of your faucets is discolored.
At Ben Franklin Plumbing, our technicians use state-of-the-art technology and procedures to locate all pipes and replace them with precision. If you have concerns about the pipe in your home, contact the professionals at Ben Franklin Plumbing in Columbus at 706-405-2311 or in Opelika/Auburn at 334-246-4246.

Ahhh the holiday season. It’s a time to gather with family and friends, sometimes at a level of stress that is unimaginable during other times of the year. You thought it was just you but did you know that even your plumbing can get stressed out during the holidays? It is a very busy time for Ben Franklin Plumbing but there is always time to handle your plumbing issues.
As you prepare holiday meals and then clean up afterward, sometimes it isn’t just Uncle Phil who eats too much. Too many cooks in the kitchen feeding scraps to the garbage disposal can really clog things up! Often, things are put in that shouldn’t be or too much is crammed in all at once. From potato skins to cabbage, grease to bones and even egg shells or metal, it’s important that some things not be forced into the garbage disposal.
Your kitchen help may not appreciate being told how to use the garbage disposal but at the same time, it is doubtful that they will chip in for repairs if something goes horribly wrong.
It doesn’t always require a professional to help with your
plumbing issues. In fact, a little preventative maintenance and some helpful
advice can go a long way in saving you money.
Showerheads – A weak flow or water pressure that keeps
changing could indicate mineral buildup. Clean the holes in the showerhead with
a pin or unscrew the front of the showerhead and let it soak overnight in
vinegar. If necessary, clean it with a scrub brush before putting it back in
place.
Scalding Tap Water – It’s not just small children but many
adults who are scalded by hot tap water. The Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association
recommends that the full-on hot water temperature at the faucet be set between
120° and 125° F
Garbage Disposal – Did you know that you should use cold
water when your disposal is being used? It cuts down on how water use you
know. Every now and then, dump some ice
cubes into the disposal and grind ‘em up. It’s a great way to keep your
disposal clean. After a good ice-cold cleaning, throw in some lemon peals to
freshen it up. Your owner’s manual may have other suggestions so be sure to
check.
Roots – Roots can become a big problem. They can grow into
the joints of the pipes. A little “root-x” flushed down the toilet
can reduce the growth of roots in your pipes. Flush it down just before bedtime
so it can sit in the pipes for a while and do it’s job.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” said good
ol’ Ben Franklin but if you encounter a serious plumbing problem in your home
or business, call the professionals in Columbus at 706.405.2311 or In Auburn at
